I have been meaning to comment more on bringing data into MS Dynamics GP.  A client called this week with a problem relating to the number of detail lines that can be entered on a journal entry.  Apparently there was some sort of error that limited the number of detail lines.  I suggested to break the journal entry into two parts and let me research the problem.  So this post will comment on the journal entry detail line limit and importing GL transactions into MS Dynamics GP.

I was curious about the limit.  I have always been told and trained and believed there was no apparent limit to most transactions in MS Dynamics GP.  So I decided to do a test.  I modified the GLtrx.txt tab delimited file that the GL One Source Transaction import in Integration Manager uses in IMSamples to use 1000 detail lines for a single journal entry.  I ran the IM import and had no problems.  The integration ran in less than a minute. I was able to view the journal entry, scroll through the journal entry, and post the journal entry with no problems.

I decided the test was to easy so I bumped it up a notch like Emerald.  So I modified to Gltrx.txt to include 12000 detail line entries. The only difference this time is that the integration tool 15 minutes to complete.  So I have to conclude that IM and GL will handle thousands of detail line entries, which is what I
